There are some significant differences between Rhino-8-Win and Rhino-8-Mac. After 90 days, saving and plug-ins stop working, unless you buy a license. This is never beneficial to end users when a new release is simply not ready for it. Wouldn’t want another fellow Apple Silicon user to get burned by this. Also shareholders demand new software releases for profit. We can upgrade, but what we bought will never work properly. What we got was software that doesn’t fully work with our hardware and will not be “fixed”. We spent $2,000USD+ on licenses specifically for these laptops. IMO it’s unacceptable for McNeel to claim Apple Silicon support on Rhino 7 and when you have issues, tell you it’s Apple’s fault and to wait for the new version, costing $$$ to upgrade when it releases. If upgrades from 7 to 8 cost the same as current upgrades listed on the site, it will be about $600USD (60% of retail) to upgrade. According to McNeel, problems with Rhino 7 on Apple Silicon will be “fixed” in Rhino 8 and they won’t be fixing anything on Rhino 7 for Apple Silicon users. Long story short, if at all possible, wait until Rhino 8 releases. They tried to blame Apple for “abruptly discontinuing Intel Macs” (they didn’t). We have talked to their support team several times to report bugs and issues-to no avail. Rhino 6 does run on Apple Silicon Macs (if you own a Mac usable license), but it is not officially supported.Ĭontrary to what Rhino’s website says, Rhino 7 does not properly support Apple Silicon Macs either. McNeel people have said in the forums they hope to release it this year. I wouldn’t expect Rhino 8 any earlier than end of 2023. Slowdowns are also common, among other things. For example, if we print (using Rhino’s Print command) “too many times”, Rhino will suddenly crash. We are frequently running into weird bugs and issues with it on these machines. We have a couple MacBooks (14” M2 Pro) here and have been using Rhino 7 on them. I work at a company that exclusively uses Rhino for our CAD work.
